Apcopay is expanding its team and seeking a skilled Technical Product Owner to join us in delivering top-notch payment services to our diverse clientele. With a strong presence in sectors like airlines, retail, telecoms, and iGaming since 2004, Apcopay is an international company with growing teams in Malta and worldwide.
The Position
The Technical Product Owner will be responsible for defining and delivering technical product initiatives related to payment orchestration, provider integrations, customer portals, internal CRM, and billing functionality. This role acts as the bridge between technical teams, business stakeholders, and external partners to maintain and grow the Payments Orchestrator Platform value proposition. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in Agile methodologies, backlog management, and iterative product delivery while also possessing strong product management skills to drive the roadmap.
Key Responsibilities include:
1. Product Ownership & Agile Delivery:
Own and define the product backlog for provider integrations, API enhancements, and operational tooling.
Work closely with development teams to ensure Agile best practices, sprint planning, and continuous delivery principles are followed.
Prioritize feature development based on impact, feasibility, and alignment with business goals.
Lead backlog refinement sessions and ensure clear communication of acceptance criteria and definition of done.
Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to deliver incremental product improvements with high business value.
2. Payment Provider & API Management:
Own API documentation, sandbox environments, and developer experience enhancements
Define and manage the strategy for integrating new payment providers, acquirers, and alternative payment methods.
Ensure API reliability, scalability, and adherence to industry standards (OpenAPI, REST, WebSockets, etc.).
Collaborate with engineering to improve API latency, redundancy, and failover mechanisms.
Partner with external providers to optimize transaction success rates and cost efficiency.
3. Operational Execution & Continuous Improvement:
Implement Agile frameworks to enhance product delivery, ensuring adaptability and quick iterations.
Work with engineering and QA individuals to improve automated testing and continuous feedback loops.
Define key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure sprint success and team velocity.
Partner with stakeholders to capture feedback and adjust priorities in an Agile manner.
Drive post-mortem analyses and retrospective improvements to streamline development cycles.
4. Customer Portal, Internal CRM & Billing Enhancements:
Define enhancements for customer facing portals to improve payment orchestrator functionality including merchant onboarding, configuration, and reporting.
Work with internal stakeholders to optimize tooling required for sales, support, and any related flows enabled via the platform.
Improve billing and transaction reconciliation processes to ensure accuracy and transparency.
5. Compliance & Risk Management:
Contribute in any processes required for adherence to global payment regulations (PSD2, PCI DSS, GDPR, etc.).
Assists in any risk and fraud monitoring requirements in collaboration with risk management teams.
Ensure auditability of transactions, logging, and reporting for regulatory and financial purposes.
6. Stakeholder Communication & Collaboration:
Act as the main point of contact between technical teams and business stakeholders.
Communicate technical challenges and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
Foster collaboration between engineering, product, and operations teams to ensure seamless product delivery.

Apcopay Limited, orchestrated by Synthesis, is a Single Layer Payments Orchestration Platform, that has been supporting merchants since 2004. It provides a unified, all-in-one solution, offering over 40 acquiring banks and 240+ payment options, processing 100 currencies for over 1200 merchants in 25 countries and connecting through a range of payment methods, including options such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Union Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
The Requirements
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, along with 5+ years of experience as a Product Owner, Technical Product Manager, or a similar role—preferably in fintech or payment services—is required.
The ideal candidate must have deep expertise in Agile methodologies, Scrum frameworks, and backlog management, as well as hands-on experience with APIs, microservices, and payment processing systems. Strong knowledge of payment processing, gateways, orchestration, PSP environments, acquiring banks, and alternative payment methods is essential.
Familiarity with financial regulations such as PCI DSS, PSD2, and GDPR, as well as experience with real-time transaction monitoring, fraud detection, and risk assessment tools, is crucial. The role also requires expertise in API design, authentication mechanisms, and security best practices.
Candidates must have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate technical challenges into actionable business solutions.
